About the UEFA Europa league 2014/2015

The UEFA Europa league is the second most important European football club competition played since season 1971/1972. Originally this competition was called the UEFA Cup, but in the 2009/2010 season it has, together with a significant change of its format and qualification rules, changed its name. At the same time, in year 1999 it has absorbed the, until then independently played, UEFA Cup winners cup.

This season of the Europa league will commence on the 18th of September 2014 after conclusion of the qualification rounds, last one of which will be played on the 28th of August. The final game of this season’s Europa league will take part on the 27th May 2015 in Warsaw at the National Stadium (Stadion Narodowy). This stadium was finished in November 2011 and has capacity of over 58 thousand viewers. Its construction costs reached the amount of 500 million EUR, it is equipped with a heated pitch, retractable roof , as well as with a façade lightning system. The most important game played at the stadium so far was the EURO 2012 semi-finals.

Format of the UEFA Europa league 2014/2015

The Europa league in its actual form consists of 3 qualification rouns, play-off round, group stage and five knock-out stage rounds – round of 32, round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals and finals.

Since 2009, 48 teams compare to previous 32 take part in the group stage. One part of the 48 teams will accrue from the Europa league qualification, the other part will be filled with unsuccessful teams from the Champions league qualification. Teams qualified into the group stage will be drawn on the 29 th of August into 12 groups of four. Teams from one football association cannot be drawn into the same group. After the end of the group stage, two teams from each group (in total 24 teams) advance into the knock-out phase, together with the 8 teams which will finish on the 3rd position in the Champions league group stage phase.

In each round of the knock-out phase (round of 32, round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals and finals) clubs play two games against each other, one home and one away. Before and after the round of 32 and the round of 16, as well as after the quarter-finals, a draw will determine which teams will meet each other in the next round of the knock-out phase. The final game, however, will only be decided in a one single game. The Europa league winner automatically qualifies into the UEFA Super cup, since the 2015/2016 season the winner qualifies into the Champions league, at least into its play-off round.

Brief history of the UEFA Europa league

The Europa league (originally UEFA Cup) was founded as an indirect successor of the so called Inter-Cities Fair Cup organized between 1955 and 1971. This competition was originally intended only for clubs in the cities which organized trade fairs, after 1968 it began to be played based upon standings of clubs in the domestic competitions. In its last season, 64 clubs participated in the cup, which also motivated UEFA to take over its organization.

Number as well as format of the Europa league has changed several times in its history. The most important changes occurred in years 1999 (absorption of the UEFA Cup winners cup), 2004/2005 (introduction of the group stage) and in 2009 (absorption of the Intertoto Cup, change of the competition’s name, increase in the number of the group stage participants, change of qualification rules).

The Europa league title (including UEFA Cup) has so far been won by 27 different clubs, while as many as 12 clubs have won the title more than once. Historically most successful clubs in the competition’s history are Juventus, Internazionale, Liverpool and Sevilla, each of which triumphed in the league three times. Sevilla is also the last league’s winner.
